Planning Early: Understanding Your Care Options in Ontario

Elderly woman looking through a windowAs we age or care for loved ones with health challenges, one of the most important things we can do is plan ahead. Whether you’re a caregiver or planning for your own future, understanding the range of care options available in Ontario, both short-term and long-term, can help you make informed, confident decisions.

At Circle of Care, we know that most people want to remain in their homes for as long as possible and with the right support, that’s often achievable. However, waiting until a crisis occurs can limit your choices. By exploring care options early, you can reduce stress, avoid rushed decisions, and ensure that care aligns with your values and needs. Whether you’re looking for temporary support or long-term solutions, Ontario offers a continuum of care to meet diverse needs.

Short-Term Care Options: Support When You Need It

Short-term care is designed to provide temporary relief or assistance, whether you’re recovering from illness, need extra help at home, or you are a caregiver in need of a break.

Respite Care at Home

Circle of Care offers Personal Support Services that allow individuals to receive care in the comfort of their own homes. This includes:

  • Help with bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping and meal preparation
  • Companionship and emotional support

These services can be arranged on a short-term basis to give caregivers time to rest or attend to personal matters. Depending on eligibility, services may be government-funded or available for a fee.

Adult Day Programs

Our Adult Day Program provides a safe, engaging environment for older adults living with dementia or other cognitive impairments, or who are frail and elderly. It’s a great option for caregivers who need a few hours or days off during the week while participants benefit from:

  • Social and recreational activities
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • Personal care and supervision

This program not only provides respite for caregivers but also enhances the well-being of participants. Services can be partly government-funded or available for a fee.

Government-Affiliated Respite Options

In addition to Circle of Care’s services, Ontario Health atHome coordinates other respite options, including:

  • Short stays in long-term care homes (up to 60 days at a time, 90 days per year)
  • Professional in-home care (nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy)
  • Homemaking services (when paired with personal support)

Eligibility is based on the care recipient’s needs and home environment. Some services are fully funded, while others may involve a co-payment or private fee.

Long-Term Care: When Home Is No Longer Safe

While home is where most people want to be, there may come a time when it’s no longer safe or sustainable. Long-term care homes provide 24/7 support for individuals with complex medical, physical, or cognitive needs.

These homes offer:

  • Assistance with daily living
  • 24-hour nursing and personal care
  • Medical services and access to health professionals
  • Meals, housekeeping, and laundry
  • Social, recreational, and spiritual programming

All long-term care homes in Ontario are regulated and funded by the government. Accommodation fees are standardized, though optional services (e.g., cable, hairdressing) may cost extra.

Eligibility includes:

  • Being 18 or older
  • Having a valid OHIP card
  • Needing 24-hour nursing and personal care that cannot be met through community services
  • Requiring assistance with activities of daily living

Wait times can range from 6 months to over 2 years, depending on care needs and home preferences. Planning early and selecting multiple homes can improve your chances of a timely placement.
