For Joan Shiner, practising empathy and caregiving comes naturally. She believes everyone can start small—one act of kindness can grow into a wave of positivity that benefits everyone. Whether it’s a smile returned by a client, or carrying biscuits in her purse for dogs she encounters, Joan’s philosophy is simple: it takes very little to spread joy.
This passion for positive change inspired her to begin volunteering at the age of sixteen at the Children’s Psychiatric Research Institute in London, Ontario, and eventually led her to a dedicated career as a nurse, and her 30+ years of volunteer work with Temple Sinai.
A Lifelong Commitment to Giving Back
For the past two years, Joan has been volunteering with Circle of Care’s Adult Day Program (ADP), which supports individuals living with memory loss or physical frailty. The program offers a safe, stimulating environment led by trusted professionals who prioritize nurturing, attentive care. Activities range from virtual reality therapy and baking to spa services and hearing clinics, giving clients a chance to socialize and engage.
Joan’s connection to the program is personal. Her husband used to attend the program after he was diagnosed with dementia. When he was admitted to Baycrest’s long term care facility, she decided that she wanted to give back to the Circle of Care program as a volunteer.
Each week, Joan helps prepare and serve meals—but for her, the true value lies in the connections she makes. Smiling, chatting, and listening to clients is where she finds the heart of the experience.
“Every day is different and has its special moments of joy,” she says. Joan’s favourite part is “circle time,” where she might dance or enjoy a musical performance with clients.
She’s especially attuned to the needs of individuals who may be feeling down or are facing challenges with mobility or cognition. Joan makes it a priority to ensure every moment counts, offering space, presence, or one-on-one support where it’s needed most.
Extending Compassion Beyond the Program
As a retired nurse, Joan finds it deeply rewarding to apply her professional skills in ways that bring comfort and companionship to others. “I get paid with my heart,” she shares.
Her passion for the ADP has even brought others to the program. Joan often encourages families to explore the support it provides, particularly for caregivers who need time to themselves. “The program provides an outlet so families have time for peace,” she adds. “It gives the family member a chance to do something, to take care of themselves.”
Looking Ahead with Hope
Currently, Joan has no plans of slowing down. She hopes to see the program continue to thrive and grow, reaching even more families and easing the shared responsibility of care. Her journey is a reminder that kindness, when given freely and consistently, can leave a lasting impact.
