Finding Meaning and Purpose in Later Stages of Life
As we enter later stages of life, we experience several major transitions—retirement, changes in physical or cognitive abilities, children growing up and becoming independent, the loss of friends and loved ones, and many shifts in our sense of identity. To navigate these changes, it’s important to find meaning and purpose in everyday life. Rediscovering your ‘why’ can be a powerful guide to fulfillment in later years.
Many seniors find renewed purpose through mental stimulation, physical wellness, and meaningful social connections. Whether it’s learning something new, moving your body, or engaging with your community, there are many ways to stay inspired and connected.
Pathways to Purpose: Mental, Physical, and Social
Mental Stimulation
Learning is not reserved for your youth: there are many books, classes, and community programs available that provide people of all ages the opportunity to explore topics of interest such as philosophy, art, mindfulness, science and more.
At Circle of Care, we have many virtual sessions that include brain teasers and group activities that provide education and stimulating conversation.
Given how digital our world is, many seniors also find it useful to hone their digital literacy skills, whether through local courses and workshops. For instance, the Ontario Society of Senior Citizens’ Organizations run regular classes at varying levels for learning how to use the computer. You can call them at 416-785-8570 ext 224 or email them at education@ossco.org. Their website also has a calendar that lists their upcoming classes and programs here.
There are also some great, free Senior Digital Skills (Toronto Public Library) in-person computer classes across Toronto. Check your local branch to sign up or call 416-397-5981.
For seniors living with dementia, our Adult Day Program includes cognitive group discussions, meditation, trivia, language lessons and more. Coupled with guided journaling, workshops, lectures, or other programming, there are many ways to keep your mind sharp and engaged after retirement.
Physical Wellness
When rediscovering a sense of purpose in life, caring for your body can be just as important, if not more important, than looking after your mind. While powerlifting and marathon running may be intimidating, intentional movements such as tai chi, yoga, water aerobics, Zumba exercise, or daily walking in nature can help you stay sharp, connected, and healthy.
Circle of Care provides free group exercise and falls prevention classes to seniors living in the community. Classes are led by trained fitness professionals. You must be 65+ to participate. If you do not meet this requirement, please contact Mila Robinson at mrobinson@circleofcare.com.
Our exercise and falls prevention classes are designed to help participants increase mobility, relieve pain, and reduce the risk of falls by building strength and improving balance. They are a mix of standing and sitting exercises. You can find out more on our exercise and falls prevention page.
Also, nourishing our body with nutrient-dense, whole foods can also keep your energy levels balanced throughout the day and promote mental clarity. Many people find joy in preparing meals, discovering new recipes, and enjoying delicious food with their loved ones. We have built a library of useful nutrition-oriented information and resources for you to peruse on our resources page.
Meaningful Social Connection
Connecting with others, engaging with your community, and giving back can be very helpful for finding meaning later in life. Joining social groups for seniors can be a great way to stay connected and foster a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself.
Circle of Care hosts in-person or virtual social events and activities to provide spaces for seniors to make friends and connect socially. There are social cooking classes, information sessions, active games, and even opportunities to celebrate holidays as a community.
Another way to find your purpose while staying connected can be through volunteering. Spreading kindness while meeting new people and having a positive impact on their lives can help build a profound sense of purpose and community. Circle of Care has a community of over 400 volunteers who support a wide range of programming and clients. There are many ways to get involved. Please visit our website to learn more about our volunteer programs and how they can help you rediscover your purpose.
