Bringing Creative Healing to Life
Written by Kaira B., in collaboration with the Communications team
Strong volunteer programs are shaped by the people who power them. Their ideas, talents, and commitment influence how services evolve and how clients experience care. At Circle of Care, volunteers are an integral part of program development—helping to create thoughtful, engaging experiences that respond to real needs in meaningful ways.
Janet C. is one of those volunteers. Over the past decade, she has contributed her time, her creativity, and her insights to strengthen and expand Circle of Care’s services in lasting ways.
This spring, Janet was recognized for 10 years of service at Circle of Care’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Night. Her contributions span multiple areas, including Hospice and Bereavement Support, the Adult Day Program, and Meals on Wheels, as well as a variety of special events and short-term initiatives.
After retiring from a career as a dietitian, Janet was initially drawn to Circle of Care because of our wide range of volunteer opportunities. Over time, her role evolved beyond participation to collaboration, as she began helping to shape and develop new programs. Most notably, she co-created Creative Healing Sessions, an art-based therapy group grounded in her passion for connection, creativity, and compassionate care.
Creative Healing Through Connection
Offered through our Bereavement Support services, Creative Healing Sessions provide participants with a structured yet approachable way to process grief. Each month, Janet partners with a bereavement case manager to facilitate an online group session where participants navigate grief through creative expression in a supportive, art therapy-inspired environment – no artistic experience required.
Each session explores a different theme. Following an introductory meditation, Janet leads participants through a simple arts-based activity designed to help them express their feelings and foster a greater sense of ease. The session concludes with an optional sharing circle, where participants are invited to discuss their artwork and the emotions behind it.
“It is an honour and a privilege to walk alongside people in their grief,” Janet shares. “To support them, and witness their growth is incredibly meaningful. The sessions are deeply rewarding—often eye-opening and very powerful.”
The Power of Letting Go
One recent session, centred on the theme of letting go, resonated strongly with participants., Individuals were invited to write down the thoughts and feelings they were holding onto and wished to release, and then tear up the paper. For many, the physical act of ripping the paper proved deeply cathartic.
“People were immersed in the process,” Janet recalls. “Many said it was so helpful. They said they felt lighter.”
Experiences like these highlight the value of creating accessible, meaningful spaces for emotional expression.
Expanding Creating Engagement
Janet continues to bring creativity into Circle of Care’s work with clients and caregivers. Drawing on her personal love for scrapbooking, Janet has co-facilitate a variety of hands-on activities, including decoupage and card-making sessions, both in group settings and in clients’ homes.
Janet finds the work deeply rewarding. “I have learned that I add value by being there for people when they need it most,” she shares.
She has also contributed to community outreach efforts. At the UJA Littlest Volunteers: A Day of Giving Back, Janet supported a Circle of Care booth where children drew handmade cards to be included in Meals on Wheels packages for seniors in the community. Looking ahead, Janet is preparing a rock-painting activity as part of a new outdoor nature-based program.
Through these initiatives, Janet continues to find practical ways to engage clients, caregivers, and the broader community in meaningful, creative experiences.
Advice to Future Volunteers
As Janet reflects on her volunteer journey over the last ten years, she encourages others to approach volunteerism with openness and sincerity.
“Be authentic, proud, and give unconditionally—the rewards will come back to you in ways you didn’t expect,” she says. “You often get back more than you give.”
She highlights how Circle of Care is a great place to start volunteering. “Circle of Care appreciates and takes great care of their volunteers. You’re part of a great team. If you need support, don’t be afraid to reach out to staff or another volunteer.”
A Lasting Impact
As we recognize International Volunteer Year, Janet’s decade-long volunteer journey showcases the meaningful role volunteers play in shaping programs, strengthening communities, and enhancing the care experience for clients and caregivers alike. By sharing her skills and passions, Janet has helped create new opportunities for bereaved individuals to connect, express themselves and navigate grief.
