Using a Mobility Aid to Prevent Falls
The use of a cane or walker can help you to walk safely and help to decrease your fear of falling. This will increase your independence and improve your mobility when performing daily activities.
Tips for Using a Cane
Always make sure you are buying an adjustable cane. Adjust the length of your can so it stands at your wrist height.
Hold the cane on your stronger side. Move the cane and opposite leg together.
Guidance about Walkers
Consult an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to determine what type of walker you need. You can have your family doctor refer you for LHIN services to start the process. Please don’t buy a walker without consultation, as there are different walkers for different needs.
Self-Assessment: When Should I Consider a Mobility Aid?
- Do you feel unsteady on your feet?
- Do you hold onto the wall/furniture as you walk?
- Do you feel more comfortable holding onto a person as you walk?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you should consider a mobility aid.
