Finding Support and Community

Donald has been a vibrant part of the Circle of Care community for over a decade. When you meet him at a Let’s Get Together social hour, his warmth and sharp sense of humour immediately stand out.

His journey with Circle of Care began in 2005 when he was caring for his wife. Recognizing the need for additional support, he and his wife were grateful for the assistance provided to them by Personal Support Workers.

They also found joy and connection attending social events together. As a caregiver, Donald found these gatherings to be a much-needed source of energy and relief. Taking time for himself at evening events allowed him to recharge, manage stress, and ultimately be a stronger support for his wife. After her passing, Donald remained engaged with Circle of Care, continuing to participate in social programs, exercise sessions, and educational seminars.

Building Community through Connection and Activity

When asked what Circle of Care means to him, Donald expresses deep gratitude for the staff and volunteers who make it all possible. “Circle of Care is a place I can go for so many things. The staff and volunteers are excellent—they are so passionate about what they do. They have something for everyone, no matter where you are in life.”

He fondly recalls a trip to the theatre to see 39 Steps. He and his fellow attendees were laughing by the second act, and came away from the event with wonderful memories.

Donald also participates in weekly guided exercise sessions led by Circle of Care staff in his building. These activities help him stay active and maintain his well-being.

Honouring the Past and Looking Ahead

Recently, Donald took part in the Legacy Project, an intergenerational initiative designed to connect the past, present, and future through shared storytelling. As part of the project, he participated in an interview where he reflected on his life journey.

“It gave me an appreciation for the support and presence of my family members,” Donald shared.

The project fosters meaningful conversations between younger individuals and their grandparents or ‘grand friends,’ deepening connections across generations.

Through his years as a Circle of Care client, Donald has found more than just programs and services—he has built lasting friendships, stayed active, and continued to grow. His journey is a testament to the power of community and the importance of staying engaged at every stage of life. Whether through social events, exercise sessions, or storytelling projects, Donald continues to embrace new experiences, proving that connection and purpose are lifelong pursuits.
